Nokia N97 Mini Touchscreen Support

Answers to important questions about   Nokia N97 Mini

  • Why does my device have a data connection continuously active?

A data connection is automatically established when the online mode has been selected in the home screen settings. The home screen widgets can then automatically fetch the latest information from internet and show it on the home screen.

The automatic data connection can be disabled by selecting the offline mode in the home screen settings:

  • Select  Options > Content to offline mode

Note that the data connection may be opened automatically also by some other applications, for example by the email clients. The home screen setting doesn't affect the connections opened by these applications.

  • Why does a user-defined ringing tone sometimes change to the default ringing tone?

The default ringing tone is played instead of the user-defined ringing tone if the system resources are low and there's not enough resources to play the user-defined tone. The device will revert to the default tone if it takes too long time to start playing the user defined tone. The issue may occur e.g. when there's a large number of applications concurrently active or if there's some other constraints preventing the music tone to be played within the allocated time.

The issue is usually temporary and the following actions will help to ensure that the device can properly play the user defined tones:

  • Close some of the applications if there are many applications active at the same time. Press and hold the menu key to see the list of currently active applications.
  • Use small files for ringing tone, avoid using large music files.
  • If an image is attached to the contact details, avoid using large images (displaying of a large image or photo at the same time when starting to play the ringing tone may cause resource issues).
  • Move the ringing tone file to C: Phone memory to speed up the playing (remember, though, to keep your other music files on the mass memory to avoid filling up the phone memory).

Improvements for handling of the ringing tone are included in N97 version 22.x.110 and N97 mini version 12.x.110. It is recommended to upgrade to these (or later) software versions if available for your device.

Note that if the ringing tone file is located on memory card, the tone will change to Nokia default tone if the memory card is removed.

  • Why does the touch screen backlight not go on when I am trying to unlock my Nokia N97 mini device?

The backlight of the touch screen switches off when the Light time-out expires. It does, however, not necessarily mean that the device gets locked at the same time. If the Keypad autolock feature is not enabled, the device will stay in the unlocked state after the backlight has switched off. If you slide the lock switch in this situation, you actually lock the device and the backlight does not turn on. You need to slide the lock switch a second time to get the backlight on.

The Keypad autolock and Light time-out are controlled by the following settings:

  • Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Auto. keyguard > Keypad autolock period
    • Auto. keyguard = device locked when the light time-out expires.
    • None = device not locked automatically.
  • Menu > Settings > Phone > Display > Light time-out (max. 1 min).

The Keypad autolock value should be set to "Auto. keyguard" to enable the locking of the device at the same time when the light time-out expires. The device can then be unlocked and the backlight turned on by sliding the lock switch once.

  • How do I format my Nokia device?

You can format your device by typing *#7370# in standby mode. Before the device is reset, you may need to provide the lock code. The default lock code is 12345.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

  • Formatting the device will permanently erase all user data and settings as well as add-on applications and operator specific settings.
  • If you have made a backup of the device data, the data can be restored from the backup after formatting but some add-on applications can have restrictions that they are not restored from the backup.
  • If you use formatting to repair faulty behaviour of the device, restoring the backed-up data files may restore the unwanted behaviour as well. In that case, a partial restore may resolve the situation.
  • The contents of the SIM card and memory card (MMC) are not erased during formatting. Note, however, that in some device models (e.g. Nokia N8-00, E7-00, E6-00 and X7-00) the internal mass memory E: will be formatted in this situation. It is therefore important that you back up all your data from the E: mass memory before resetting the device. Use Nokia Suite to back up the contents to your PC.

  • Operator selection: Select Automatic to set the device to search for and select one of the available networks, or Manual to manually select the network from a list of networks. If the connection to the manually selected network is lost, the device sounds an error tone and asks you to reselect a network. The selected network must have a roaming agreement with your home cellular network, that is, the network service provider whose SIM card is in your device.

Glossary: A roaming agreement is an agreement between two or more network service providers to enable the users of one service provider to use the services of other service providers.

  • Cell info display: Select On or Off to activate or deactivate cell info reception.
